The interaction of failure modes in cold – formed built – up members requires further study. The combined thermal and structural performance of these sections requires optimisation. Specifically, the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for the strength prediction of cold – formed built – up members needs further study. Built – up cold – formed steel compression members are commonly used as shear wall chord members , and at openings of doors and windows (stud packs) to resist the additional load transferred from an opening header. The provisions in North American Specification for the Design of Cold – Formed Steel Structural Members , AISI S100 Section D1.2 are limited to concentrically loaded compression members. Built – up members are common framing members such as boundary studs, trimmer joists, stud packs, and headers. This SE University session reviewed the applicable AISI S100 and S240 design provisions for built – up compression members and built – up flexural members . The various design requirements and limit states applicable for creating a cold – formed steel built – up member were also discussed. The common solution is to design a built – up profile consisting of two or more cold – formed steel (CFS) framing sections. Built – up profiles use common CFS framing members , such as shear wall boundary studs, floor joists, stud packs and headers. The cyclic behavior of G550 high-strength cold – formed steel built – up compression members was studied through both experimental and numerical methods.
