Thomas Cole (born February 1 , 1801 , Bolton – le – Moors , Lancashire , England — died February 11, 1848, Catskill, New York, U.S.) was an American Romantic landscape painter who was a founder of the Hudson River school. Thomas Cole was an English-born American Romantic landscape and history painter who created the Hudson River School, which was an American art movement that peaked in the mid-19th century. Originally from Lancashire, Cole came to the United States in 1818 and began residing in Ohio. Thomas Cole was born in 1801 at Bolton , Lancashire in Northwestern England and emigrated with his family to the United States in 1818. During the early years Cole lived for short periods in Philadelphia, Ohio, and Pittsburgh where he worked as an itinerant portrait artist. In 1818, at the age of 17, Cole immigrated to the United States with his family, settling in Steubenville, Ohio.
